“At Telamon, I was welcomed with open arms, receiving a credit counselor and a housing coach, Jennie and Amanda. With their help, I was able to fix my credit and raise it a hundred points in six months! I was approved for a loan and purchased a home for me and my sons.” —Nathan

A single parent of three boys, Nathan is a grateful, humble man. He also has a felony record. Following his discharge from prison, Nathan was determined to build a new life with his boys. He summoned the courage and took a change: he walked into Telamon’s West Virginia office and asked for help.

Eager to purchase a home and stay the course, Nathan returned for a follow up appointment two weeks ahead of schedule. He had completed all his action steps plus more. In as little as one month, he followed all guidance from the Telamon staff and further reduce his expenses, allowing him to pay off debt and reducing his credit card balance, thus increasing his credit score substantially.

Within just 3 months of working with Telamon, Nathan began looking for a property to purchase. He attended one of Telamon’s Homebuyer Education workshops, and Jennie walked him through the process of establishing additional credit and together, they researched loan options.

At his first appointment at Telamon, Certified Housing Counselor Jennie Shriner set him up with a personalized financial education resources and one-on-one support from Financial Coach Amanda Heck, to assist him with budgeting, credit basics, and pre-purchase counseling. His goals were ambitious: to purchase a home within 6 months, improve his credit score and increase his savings. Working with his counselors, Nathan developed a specific plan of action which included tracking all monthly expenses, disputing a collection account, settling a collection account.

“I would like to thank Telamon and Heather for all of the support and guidance. While I know it was my determination that got me where I am, she kept me motivated and on track — she was the backbone and glue that held it together. She rocks!”

Brandi joined Telamon’s West Virginia National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) as a single mom. For many years, she supported her family as a line worker at a local poultry plant. Even before the pandemic hit, she was a woman with a core of strength and resilience by way of her personal history. She overcame mental health issues, substance abuse and incarceration.

Brandi’s case manager, Heather, encouraged her to focus her attention on continuing her education. Telamon’s NFJP program was able to assist Brandi with financial support for educational supplies, career counseling, and help with navigating community services to complete her education.

This fueled her determination, while working full time at the poultry plant. Before she knew it, Brandi had obtained an Associate degree in Applied Science of Business Management and in Accounting. Just as things were finally looking up for Brandi, the pandemic unfolded, and Brandi found herself feeling discouraged once again.

When Brandi first met with Telamon staff, she had recently moved to West Virginia from Florida, where she had been incarcerated on a felony charge. She was working while attending school, but things were not easy for her emotionally and physically. The physical stress of working on the poultry line led to chronic pain, and she was often too mentally exhausted to focus on her studies. Brandi was barely making ends meet. It was clear that she needed to make a life change.

With Heather’s ongoing motivation and support, Brandi learned to view setbacks as opportunities. Shortly after, she received a job offer as an administrative coordinator within the poultry plant where she had previously worked. Working at an elevated position, she obtained an increase in pay along with benefits — something she never imagined possible.

Now, Brandi loves her new job. She has also become a mentor to others with similar experiences. She aspires to help others, as Telamon helped her — to use her experience to give back to her community. Brandi’s grit and determination are a testament to the power of resiliency, support, and second chances.

During the height of the pandemic in 2020, Bekah found herself living in a motel with her adult son who was a recovering addict. They had stayed there for quite some time due to financial hardship. Bekah worked extra hours as an assistant manager at a local gas station, but she struggled to pay for rent and basic living expenses. Even though she qualified for financial assistance, background checks and administration issues delayed her leasing affordable housing. It was a traumatic time.

Susan also encouraged Bekah to participate in Telamon’s successful renters’ workshop to gain budgeting and other financial literacy skills. On top of that, she connected Bekah’s son to Jobs and Hope, a local program that offers job training and resources for people in recovery. “With determination and motivation, things can happen,” said Susan. “If someone is a part of your journey, that lets you know that you are never alone.”

Bekah made tremendous growth over the months they worked together. Once fully settled, she plans to find a job that offers better pay. Susan is confident that the job skills Bekah has acquired, combined with the right clothes and some interview training, will enable her to advance her job prospects.

Then, Bekah met Susan, an Information and Referral Specialist at Telamon in Martinsburg, WV. After working tirelessly with Bekah and her son for five months, they were approved to move into an apartment. Bekah was also referred to community resources to help her get back on her feet. She received donated furnishings for her home as well as business casual outfits for future job interviews.

She would also like to buy a car since she currently does not have her own transportation. Overall, Bekah feels grateful for the people that helped her and plans to pay it forward within her community once she is able.

Leslie Lara is a very dedicated, young woman who has worked hard to accomplish her goals. As a daughter of farmworkers, she saw how her parents suffered financial hardships because they did not have the opportunity to pursue an education. At the age of 17, Leslie Lara enrolled in Telamon-TRC’s Workforce and Career Services, while attending Nash Rocky Mount Early College High School. Since her family worked in agriculture, she qualified for the Nation Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP). With Telamon’s support, she received counseling services to help with her personal, educational and professional development.

While in high school, she volunteered during the weekends and evenings at her church tutoring kindergarten students that needed extra help. Her volunteer experience inspired her to pursue a career in education so that she could continue teaching children.

Fatima, a stay at home mom with one toddler, struggled to maintain their needs with only her husband’s income due to circumstances that prevented her from working. As a student taking English classes with Telamon’s BLOC (bilingual education) program she attended a Housing and Financial Empowerment workshop on the topic of credit, offered in Spanish to BLOC participants. Eager to learn more about how credit was affecting her household and her family’s financial goals, Fatima scheduled a one-on-one session with Telamon’s Financial Coach in January 2018. In her coaching sessions Fatima not only identified how credit played a role in her family’s goals, she also developed a detailed spending plan that helped clarify their financial situation. The family used a savings chart to begin saving money monthly working toward an annual goal. Fatima was referred to Telamon’s housing counseling team and participated in the “My 1

After attending the workshop, Fatima and her husband then scheduled a one-on-one housing advising session with the housing counseling team – leading to their purchase of a home! In one year, Fatima and her family had achieved their goal of homeownership.

Hi, I’m Natasha. I work with children, parents, and families every day. This is not where I started!

I had no interest in being involved in any of the activities offered to parents. With the patient encouragement of the staff, I slowly came around, participating for 5 or 10 minutes – working up to a whole 90-minute session. However, I was still stressed due to my job and I had very few social skills.

When my son was seen because of some speech delays, I left my job to be a stay-at home mom. I became more involved in my children’s education in Head Start. With more time to spend with my family, I became more involved in my children’s education. During the parent education sessions, I warmed up and starting learning from the other parents and staff about low cost ways to engage my children in educational activities at home, tips about healthy eating and child development. In the words of Ms. Tanya, the Head Start Center Director where I am now employed as a secretary, I “blossomed!”

When my own babies were small, I was approached by a Telamon-TRC staff member about enrolling Gabe and Sidney into the Head Start program. I was working as a correctional officer in a prison 12-hours a day. My job was stressful, and I wasn’t able to spend any time with my family. All I knew is I needed a baby sitter. When Gabriel and Sidney were accepted into Head Start, I was happy to have the childcare, but didn’t see any use in getting involved otherwise.

Inspired by what I was learning and doing, I got involved with our local Chamber of Commerce to arrange a coat drive – 200 coats were donated to help keep children in Sampson County, NC warm. From there, I developed a project called “Village Closet,” to provide Head Start families with clothing and other things that they might need but sometimes cannot afford.

Tanya says that I’m a role model, mentor and advocate for other parents, children, and families, but I say that Telamon Head Start has truly been a blessing to ME. Now ages 3 and 5, my children are growing up to be great at everything they do, and I attribute this to being blessed to cross paths with Telamon.

My name is Samantha. I was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas in the country of Mexico. At the young age of two years old my father found it in our best interest to move to the United States. He had been presented with a job opportunity and we had relatives living in the area, so we decided to make the move. There was much promise in moving to the United States and like any other family, we were chasing the American Dream. Upon the arrival to the U.S., we found habitation in a small town in South Carolina. My father’s job was our only source of income for a while, so we soon found ourselves barely surviving. My mother took a job working in a tobacco field, making little, but a little was better than nothing. My sisters and I went to school, studied hard to make good grades.

Telamon-TRC’s Workforce & Career Services encompasses a broad array of customized work readiness and job skill training programs, focusing on helping farmworkers, veterans, and youth who seek to build skills and career paths. Work readiness and job skill development are often supplemented by language services (ESL), educational support (GED) and includes one-on-one counseling, group workshops and supportive services.

After high school I didn’t know what to do with myself. I had put so much time and effort into something that ultimately left me with nowhere to turn because I couldn’t afford to attend college. I wanted the American Dream just like others living in the U.S. – I had hopes and dreams of living a happy and successful life. But it seemed like just that, a dream, and nothing more. I had lost all hope and had at that point come to terms with that fact that I would be a waitress for the rest of my life.

That was until a friend told me about Telamon Corporation. I enrolled with Telamon as a dependent of a farmworker seeking assistance with continuing my education of fulfilling my dream of becoming a Computer Engineer. Talking with a Workforce Development Specialist at Telamon was my first step in experiencing the feeling of the American Dream. I felt like a burden was lifted off my shoulder when I learned that Telamon would financially assist me with fees and supplies to attend training. I was finally given the opportunity to fulfill my dream. This community cared for me, guided me to my current path of studying to become a Computer Engineer. How sweet life is on the other side! This truly could not have been possible without the help from Telamon Corporation and Florence-Darlington Technical College. I honestly cannot thank them all enough for what they have done for me!

Our financial instability was evident to us, even though our parents tried their hardest to not burden us with that information. With our situation in mind, we all started working as soon as we reached the age of fifteen, anything to help our parents. I managed to graduate high school with honors in the top 5% of my graduating class – all while working every chance I had.

Natives of Mexico, Alejandro’s parents had to drop out of school in order to help their families financially. In partnership with local employers, the Work Experience (WEX) program provided hands-on training in a specific career field, while the participant earned wages funded by Telamon.

Alejandro was placed with a local employer, Tom Williams Construction Company. Telamon also provided him with everything he needed to work safely on the construction site, such as boots, a drill, tool belt and other industry equipment. With the wages he earned, he was thrilled to buy his siblings new clothes for school. Alejandro’s work performance soon exceeded his employer’s expectations. Due to his hard work, dependability and willingness to learn, he was offered employment at the same employer as soon as the WEX program ended.

Alejandro’s strong work ethic combined with Telamon’s NFJP program helped him to overcome the barriers he faced. With the help of a Financial Coach and Youth Program Specialist at Telamon, he was able to use his construction abilities into restoring a house that would become his own. After the renovations were completed, he moved into his home—only minutes from his family. Now Alejandro has a great job, financial stability and a home to call his own.

Even though college was not part of Alejandro’s track, his high school teacher encouraged him to attend a college night event that included Telamon’s National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP). There he learned that the program offered children of Farmworkers help with their education and careers, even if college wasn’t part of their long-term goals.

I was a mother without strength, without knowledge. Through my work in Policy Council, I have realized the full value of the Head Start program.” —Eusebia

Eusebia’s story with Telamon Michigan’s Migrant Head Start program started nineteen years ago with her first child, Francisco, in 2001. Following Francisco, Eusebia had five additional children: each one has been enrolled in Telamon’s Head Start program. Parents of children enrolled in Head Start participate in activities that support the ways the programs run in their local centers. Each center has a Policy Council; getting involved in this group is one of the ways that parents can get involved.

Head Start is part of Telamon-TRC’s Early Childhood & Family Support services, a comprehensive program that offers quality early education in and out of the home, parenting education, health and social-emotional wellness services (including woman before, during, and after pregnancy), nutrition education, and family support services. Since 1965 Telamon-TRC has helped individuals like you access services that lead to better jobs, better lives, and better communities. Learn more about our Head Start programs today!

In 2014, Eusebia attended a statewide meeting of Policy Council. She was so inspired by the dynamics and commitment of the parents, that she wanted to get even more involved. She chose to run for president for the Parent Committee at her center, and she won. As an immigrant farmworker with limited formal education and a single mother of six, Eusebia never thought that she could be in a leadership position. Nor did she think that she could possibly serve as a role model for other farm workers and her children. Since the beginning of her new position, she was determined to work on behalf of the families in her community. She has been cheered on and supported by Telamon staff members like State Family Services Coordinator Jorge Torres every step of the way.

This is Eusebia’s fifth year as the president for the Parent Committee in her local Head Start center. In 2019 she was elected president of the area’s Policy Council. As president she attends strategic planning meetings at the state level, and works hard to strengthen relationships with parents, agencies, and farmworker families statewide. Eusebia represented Telamon Michigan at five conferences at different states in 2019, including the National Migrant and Seasonal Head Start conference in Washington, DC. As Jorge shared Eusebia’s list of impressive accomplishments, his voice was full of admiration and pride.

Certainly, Eusebia has become a role model not only to other parents with similar backgrounds, but also to her children, who are proud of her and continue to support her in this journey.

Because her father is a long-time migrant farmworker, Joane qualified for Telamon’s National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) – which enabled her to participate in our workforce development programs as a young adult. Joane participated in Telamon’s workforce development program, while at the same time pursuing a college education. Joane was enrolled in Michigan State University’s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), a program that supports children of farm workers with tuition assistance and supplies.

Meet Joane, who has been involved with Telamon in Michigan since she was a very young child, enrolled in Telamon’s Migrant Head Start program.

“Growing up in a farm worker migrant family was difficult. Not knowing where we would live was the hardest part. Most of the time we would stay at a family trailer until my parents were able to find something. It could’ve taken days, weeks, and sometimes months before we were able to find our own place. I also remember there would be times when we would have really bad rainy season and it would destroy the crops. This would make it difficult for my parents to provide for us. During these hard times, my parents would go to lakes to fish, just to make sure we had food on the table.

Because we moved around a lot, my sister and I attended different schools every year until we reach middle school. Education was always my mom’s number one priority. She made sure we didn’t fall behind by putting us in after school programs and having us take special classes such as ESL. For me, it was hard to make friends at a new school and once I had, it’d be time to pack everything and move to a different state and start all over.”

Throughout the course of Joane’s childhood, her parents traveled between Michigan, North Carolina, and Michigan, picking tomatoes. In her own words:

Zuleyka and her family lost nearly everything after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico in the fall of 2017. Destitute and homeless, the family relocated to Maryland to build new lives. Without the means to rent an apartment, they stayed with family members.

As a teenager, Zuleyka and her father worked at a nearby chicken plant that processed raw poultry in order to provide for the family. However, her health quickly declined making the intensity and physical demands of the job unbearable. It was difficult decision for Zuleyka to leave the poultry plant since her family relied on her for financial support. Due to her lack of work experience, she had to take a low paying job at a small, local pharmacy. Zuleyka’s transformation began when she learned about the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) at Telamon.

Through Telamon’s NFJP program, Zuleyka received career counseling and services, and Dina played a key role. Zuleyka discovered that she wanted to become a certified Pharmacy Technician. With the assistance of her case managers, she registered for an online Certified Pharmacy Technician program. After 12 difficult months working and studying at the same time, Zuleyka completed the certification program with honors. Plus, she passed the exam required by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy. Now working as a certified Pharmacy Technician, she is a happy and successful wage earner, supporting her family and contributing to her community.

Meet Maudeline. Through the NFJP program, she gained training in Telamon MD’s culinary arts program. Married with six children, Maudeline aspired to work as a cook at the local hospital, and Telamon helped her work toward that goal. A mere two years ago, she felts as if she was destined to spend her entire life working on a farm. Empowered by on-the-job training and classroom skill-building sessions provided by Telamon, Maudeline is now well on her way toward the bright future she envisions. “To be in the NFJP program…is the most important step someone can take towards their dream. I feel like I have a bright future ahead of me! I can now support my family. I can now support my children. I cannot wait to graduate and start working.”

Jeremy Tyler, Telamon staff member, shares the inspirational story of Tyrone.

“Homeless, sleeping in a cardboard box behind Goodwill, I wasn’t able to trust anyone because I didn’t trust myself. I had turned into my own worst enemy and felt like there was no way out. Drinking every day, just not doing anything to contribute to my life or society.”

As phase one progressed, Tyrone started to open up a little bit. The intelligence of this gentleman began to shine through. He was always the first to volunteer and he never missed a day of class. It was clear that he wanted what we had to offer. As we were studying for the ServSafe® Manager Exam, Tyrone excelled. We kept on pushing him to do his best. I think he had been pushed down for so long that he forgot what it was like to have people actually in his corner rooting for him, pushing him to do something great.

Within one month in the FAST program, Tyrone received the keys to his own apartment. This man had gone from a cardboard box to an apartment of his very own in about one month due to his incredible dedication, hard work, and desire to turn his life around. He changed his life by taking that first step, choosing to be a part of Telamon’s program. He continued with FAST and graduated in March of 2018 at the top of his class. He passed his ServSafe® Manager exam and accepted a full-time job at a local Chipotle restaurant, and aspires to get into their manager training program.

By way of follow up, I talk to Tyrone at least twice a week. He thanks me all the time for helping him, but it is me that should be thanking him. We all have customers that touch us and remind us why we do what we do. Tyrone is a success and his story is far from over.

The FAST Program is a 16-week, two-phase intensive hands-on culinary training through our Workforce & Career Servicesprogram. It is not an easy program. It is very challenging.

Tyrone had been homeless for three years. He slept anywhere, in boxes in the winter because the insulation of the boxes kept him warm. He did any kind of odd job to get money to support his habit. He was a 53-year-old addict and alcoholic with no direction in life. His health was slowly declining, along with the dreams he once had.

I will never forget the day that I met Tyrone. Tyrone told me that he had always wanted to cook and that he had dreamed of being a chef, but due to life’s difficulties throughout the years, his dreams were destroyed. I asked him some questions pertaining to the FAST Program, and I could tell that he lacked confidence. He was so beaten down. I asked him if he would show up every day, be on time and try his absolute best – and he said yes. Tyrone was given our last scholarship spot in the class. When he was told that he was accepted into the program, I saw his face express something. I wasn’t sure if it was shock, excitement, or surprise… but it was a spark of something.

Formerly a self-employed architect, the country’s financial crisis found Deric out of a job in 2008. Motivated to find a new career path, he completed a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and sought to build a career in Software Engineering. Unfortunately, Deric faced challenges in securing work in the field in a highly competitive job marketplace. To make ends meet, Deric took a job as a server at Bob Evans Restaurant, and on his days off, he builds apps for the mobile marketplace. His wife Jenia stays home with their two young boys and when time allows, she works on her business: designing, writing and publishing digital crochet patterns for sale on Etsy.com. Her business continues to grow each year, providing a little extra money for things such as surprise car repairs or Christmas presents.

Telamon-TRC offers a variety of Housing & Financial Empowerment workshops and customized services that aim to help you build financial security.

Living week to week with just enough to pay all the monthly bills, Deric and Jenia found it very difficult to save money. When their car broke down, they were in a real bind, with no transportation to get Deric to get to work, or their kids to school. With only a modest savings, buying a car was going to put a huge strain on the family budget.

That’s when Samantha Lawson, their TRC Head Start Family Services Specialist introduced them to Larry Douthitt, a staff member with TRC’s Financial Coaching Program, who told them about Individual Development Accounts (IDA). “We were initially skeptical of the program, as it seemed too good to be true,” said Deric.

Individual Development Accounts (IDA) are special savings accounts that match the deposits of low and moderate-income savers. For every $1.00 saved in an IDA, savers receive an additional $3.00. Money in an IDA can be used to buy or repair a home, further your education (or that of your child) through college or a job training program, start or expand a small business, or purchase a vehicle. IDAs are overseen and monitored by a TRC staff member.

“Larry, our financial coach, came across as genuine, helpful and informed, and after learning how the program worked, we were at ease with the idea,” recall Deric and Jenia. Working with Larry, they put together a plan and began saving money in an IDA. Thanks to Larry’s guidance and support, Deric and his family were able to purchase a reliable vehicle.

When Ebony found TRC Head Start, she was “all over the place,” had no organizational skills and as a mom, she was mentally absent. Heartbroken about the way her life was going, she was a self-proclaimed “emotional wreck” who used recreational drugs to deal with the challenge of having a very sick child.

Ebony and her daughter Miamor (Mia), who had suffered a traumatic brain injury, were living with Ebony’s mother in a tiny one-bedroom apartment. This became too much for everyone. Feeling guilty and stressed because of Mia’s medical condition, Ebony let her do whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted. As stress mounted, Ebony and her mother were not able to continue living together, so Ebony acquired transitional housing and moved out with Mia. However, with no car or money, a lack of parenting skills, and a daughter with few self-help skills, her situation still felt bleak.

Ebony was paired with a case worker from TRC in the transitional housing program who recommended that Ebony apply for the Head Start program for Mia. Mia was eventually admitted to TRC Head Start, and their journey began. Ebony felt the encouragement of everyone at TRC Head Start. The caring staff met her where she was in life and didn’t judge her or Mia. While medical experts expected that Mia would learn slower than other children because of her brain trauma, Mia began learning at the same pace as the other children in the supportive Head Start setting.

However, Ebony was still overwhelmed. She was concerned that Mia might be taken away due to the lack of home structure, and her parenting skills. Ebony soon learned that TRC Head Start was a safe place where she could ask for help and build skills as a parent. Soon, Ebony began to feel that she was part of a big family within TRC Head Start. She and Mia also received food and other resources to support their basic needs.

“Peaceful” is how Ebony describes herself now, thanks to TRC Head Start and the various supports provided to her family. She has taken steps to get her debt paid off, with the dream of returning to college. Ebony plans to pursue a degree in the human services or social work field because of the impact of the help she received through TRC Head Start.

In May 2021, we learned of Sharmice’s untimely death. While we are deeply saddened by the loss to Sharmice’s young daughters and her family, we wanted to honor her incredible story of perseverance as inspiration to others.

A young, single mom of three girls, Sharmice had never completed high school. However, she understood the importance of education and she was determined to help her daughters start off on the right track. Like her two school-age daughters, Sharmice made certain that her youngest daughter, Jay’leah, also attended TRC’s homebased Head Start program. The Head Start program offers comprehensive child development services during weekly home visits to support parenting, child development, health, and nutrition.

Even with the setback of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Sharmice worked tirelessly to meet the child development and family goals set by her Head Start home visitor, Jennifer. With Jennifer’s guidance, Sharmice successfully overcame technology barriers so that Jay’leah could participate in the Head Start program. Not only did she overcome the initial challenge of learning digital technology, but she also learned how to navigate virtual classrooms at home for her three daughters ages 3, 9, and 12.

Armed with new technology skills, Sharmice gained more confidence in her ability and wanted to continue her own education. With Jennifer’s assistance and support, Sharmice attended an Indiana state program to obtain her high school diploma. Her three daughters and family were incredibly proud of her persistence. Motivated to further her education,

A senior citizen and an original native of South Carolina, Carey has lived as a residence of Macon, Ga for the past 40 years. She’s a caring, friendly, faith-filled woman. In past years, she made a living as a bus driver, taking children to and from school. Carey eventually retired, with only retirement income and widow compensation.

Carey now has financial confidence; she is no longer uncertain about her income and is clear on what she is able to afford. She has impacted the other seniors among her peers at church and those at the Senior Center she attends, a living example of the notion that aging does not have to be a barrier to one obtaining the things they want in life. She is now more involved in church activities, serving in roles related to community services without transportation concerns. Carey had also dreamed of being able to take her grandchildren on trips ,and was so proud to express how doing so brightens her heart – the best part is, that she can afford to do this – to live out her dreams.

Carey faced the challenges of limited income, a low credit score, and no transportation – despite all the years she’d spent driving others. She’d donated 3 of her past vehicles to charity, so was thus left in need of a vehicle herself. While living on a restricted budget, Carey thought that if she could only learn how to manage her income, then just maybe her prayers would be answered. She could finally stop having to lift a ride on the church van each Sunday for church if she could only afford to purchase her own vehicle. After four months of receiving Financial Coaching from Telamon Georgia, Carey’s ability to manage her budget and understand the importance of her payment history, Carey was finally preapproved for a loan for a brand-new vehicle. Carey no longer struggles with the burden of transportation issues, she can transport herself to and from church, run personal errands and help others that are in need. Carey stated “I am so happy, before Financial Coaching I wasn’t certain I could get a car after being denied twice. You truly helped me overcome my income barriers and credit challenges! Thank you so much for all you have done.”

Cindy contacted Telamon with bad credit but lots of hope. She wanted to take her son out of subsidized public housing unit that had become her home. She and her Telamon counselor gathered around her kitchen table to discuss her future. Cindy made the decision to tackle her credit issues. With the help of her counselor, she contacted debtors and paid off delinquent accounts. Her score rose significantly. In 2008, she became a home owner for the first time. Today, she lives in the same home and works as the Unit Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Chatham, Virginia. She carries the Telamon spirit full circle by giving back to the community.

When Tracey first started working with Kathy, Workforce Development Specialist (WDS), from Telamon, she was an 18-year-old farm worker, disillusioned and discontent. The compassionate support of the Telamon staff helped turn her life around. The guided encouragement and coaching she received from Telamon motivated Tracey to enroll in classes, and obtain gainful employment outside of farm work. When Tracey said, “I can’t do this”, her Telamon workforce development specialist said, “Yes, you can – you are – and you will.” In Kathy, Tracey found someone to give her that extra motivation to propel her to the next level. As a result, Tracey found a new career path, and a new outlook on life. Today, as a Telamon Governing Board member, she helps oversee the family of Telamon job training programs. She is part of the team that empowers people and improves communities every day.

When AAmylia’s family came in to apply at Telamon Head Start for their daughter, they had no idea of the journey that was ahead of them. Having recently moved from Massachusetts to Delaware to reunite with family, they settled in a small apartment with dad’s parents and were thrilled that AAmylia was accepted into Telamon Head Start. Anxious for her to gain skills that would prepare her for kindergarten, AAmylia’s family knew Telamon Head Start would provide a structured and nurturing environment.

Despite having no transportation, AAmylia’s family was determined to continue her education at Telamon Head Start, even if it meant walking about a mile to school in cold weather when they couldn’t find a ride. Unfortunately, the stress of this situation impacted AAmylia’s behavior at school and she was prone to temper tantrums over the smallest issues. With her mom’s job as the only source of income, things were very tight financially and the family ended up having to leave their home and move into a motel.

While AAmylia’s family was private and discreet, Telamon staff became aware of the family’s challenges and respectfully stepped in to provide support, seeking housing assistance in rental properties in the area. While their initial applications were denied due to imperfect credit, one of Telamon’s housing advisors stepped in to provide assistance. Meanwhile in the classroom, teachers worked with AAmylia using conscious discipline techniques such as breathing and talking through situations to help her develop new tools to deal with stress.

Over time, AAmylia’s family found an affordable apartment, and they are working on fixing their credit so they can purchase their own house in the future. The family’s newfound stability has helped AAmylia continue to do well in Telamon Head Start – a program that benefited everyone in the family.

Valerie is an amazing soul. Working with Valerie to achieve some of my goals, I went from having zero dollars in my savings and zero credit to my name to having enough credit to qualify for a loan to purchase a home for me and my family. —Cynthia

Sometimes, life throws curve balls. Just ask Cynthia. She was working as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), pursuing college classes to receive her LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse degree), and juggling the responsibilities of being a mother and wife, when her dad suffered a stroke, requiring her to become a caregiver for her parents.

Caregiving and a devotion to family came naturally to Cynthia, but in the back of her mind, she wanted to provide her family with more: greater economic security and a house, rather than the cramped apartment shared by seven family members. As immigrants from Nigeria, Cynthia and her family felt strongly about pursuing the many opportunities available to them in America.

When Cynthia found our Head Start program in Delaware, we learned about her need for early childhood education for her children, and her goal of home ownership. In Head Start, Cynthia’s children are gaining critical school-readiness education. And, through Telamon’s unique partnership with the $tand By Me program, Cynthia worked with one of the program’s financial coaches and obtained preapproval to purchase a house!

We believe in working with community partners to help people like Cynthia navigate life’s curve balls. As a proud new homeowner, Cynthia is a testament to the importance of working together to build stronger communities.

When Mayrani was four years old, her family moved to Tennessee where her mother found agricultural work in the rural part of the state. By age five, Mayrani had not attended school or a child care program of any kind. When her mother tried to enroll her for kindergarten, she was told that Mayrani had potential speech delays and hearing problems. The local school system recommended that she enroll at Telamon Tennessee Migrant and Seasonal Head Start (MSHS) instead of kindergarten.

Mayrani’s mother was only planning to be in Tennessee for a short period of time before moving on to pursue work in the fields of South Carolina in the fall, and then Florida in the winter. Facing a short timeline in which to assist Mayrani, the team at Telamon Head Start moved quickly to set appointments for Mayrani with a variety of practitioners and specialists who offered their services at free or reduced rates to those in need.

After a battery of tests, screenings, and exams, Mayrani was indeed found to have a hearing disorder. To assist Maryrani, it was determined that she needed hearing aids as well as surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids. The many appointments, evaluations, surgery, and hearing aid placement were all completed within the seven weeks she was enrolled in the Telamon Head Start program. During this time, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) was also completed to ensure appropriate interventions and services in Mayrani’s preschool plan, that would help her now and in her future schooling.

Telamon staff guided Mayrani and her mother through these processes, ensuring that she received the services and support she needed. Mayrani quickly recovered from her surgery, and with her new hearing aids, she began to show signs of progress. Mayrani and her family have moved to Florida where they continue to receive support from the Redlands Christian Migrant Association MSHS program. Telamon’s swift and proactive plan of action and family support made a real difference. Mayrani’s mother is her biggest advocate and works with programs to ensure her future is as bright as can be.

Danielle was a stay-at-home mom looking for childcare when she heard about Telamon’s Early Head Start (EHS) program in Elizabethton, TN. Her oldest son was one and a half and had never attended a childcare program. After being in the program, Danielle was thrilled that he learned his ABC’s, numbers, and colors; and he was fully potty trained by the end of his time in EHS. She was impressed by the quality of the program offered at Telamon, saying she loved the teachers and atmosphere at the center.

In addition to the educational services, Danielle worked with Felicia Adkins, Telamon’s family services specialist, to set a family goal. Danielle mentioned that she was interested in returning to school, so Felicia helped her research local options. Soon after, Danielle enrolled in cosmetology school. In March 2020, Danielle graduated, passed her exams, and became a licensed cosmetologist. She immediately found a job and was excited to be able to provide for her family.

Danielle’s youngest son is now enrolled with Telamon. Since he has a speech delay, Danielle has been impressed with the way the teachers at the center provide individualized services to help him improve his speech. Danielle feels confident that her children have a solid educational foundation, and she has gained new skills that will allow her to provide a better life for her family.

Resilient communities lift one another up in times of need. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Telamon-TRC’s community partners reached out to offer support to farmworker families in unexpected ways. The East Tennessee Foundation knew about Telamon’s work in Tennessee; the Foundation had awarded funding to Telamon TN for art projects in past years. Seven months into the pandemic, a senior staff member at the Foundation contacted staff at the Bybee Center in Cocke County, where Telamon offers Migrant and Seasonal Head Start services. She reached out directly to encourage Telamon to pursue support for families through the Laura J. Kress Angel Tree Fund, which helps to fill holiday wishes for children in need.

Telamon’s Bybee Center was awarded $7,500 to provide gifts for enrolled children and families. Upon receiving the award, Center staff talked with parents to ask what their children might need and want for Christmas. Their generous support enabled Telamon staff to purchase pajamas, clothing, warm coats, books, toys, as well as a tricycle or a bike with a helmet and a Kindle Fire tablet for each enrolled child.

In mid-December, Telamon staff organized an event at a local park where families could receive their gifts while socially distancing. A little girl who had been very shy and quiet spoke so rarely that the staff were concerned she might have a speech delay. When the child saw her present, she kept pointing to it asking, “Is that mine? Is that mine?” Once she opened it, she was so happy she couldn’t stop talking. As gifts were opened, the parents were almost as excited as the children. Through laughter and a few tears, parents thanked staff again and again, saying the gifts were more than their children had ever received for Christmas.

Maireny, a single mother, had two children enrolled at the Bybee Center during the 2020 season. She said things have been hard. “With Covid, there is less work and fewer resources for families. My kids had asked for bikes, and I was trying to save for that. But it was hard to save anything. When I saw that they got bikes, I was so excited. And then the clothes — it was all such a big help.”

The Angel Tree donation made a real difference for the families enrolled at the Bybee Center. It not only brought smiles to the faces of the children, it also relieved financial strain on parents dealing with lost wages due to Covid-19. Community partners, such as the East Tennessee Foundation have continually stepped up to support farmworker families during the pandemic, helping to build resilience within the local community.

Both the financial assistance as well as this exemplary generosity of spirit have contributed greatly to the farmworker community’s ability to weather the storms of 2020. The Foundation’s generous support enabled Telamon staff to purchase pajamas and clothing, warm coats, books, a few toys, as well as tricycle or a bike with a helmet and a Kindle Fire tablet for each enrolled child.
